What things to Avoid whenever You’re Applying (or how exactly to conquer your senior autumn)

What things to Avoid whenever You’re Applying (or how exactly to conquer your senior autumn)

Enough time had come. My bachelor’s level was newly in hand, and I also decided to accept the job that is first had been offered ( it had been the Great Recession and driving a car of unemployment was very real). Thankfully, working with highschool seniors as they navigated the college application process turned out to be a great fit for me! I discovered many things working at a senior school (did you know there is a software that calculates the likelihood you are going to obtain a snowfall day?!), and each fall was a lesson in just how difficult it is to be a 12th grader.

Senior 12 months is tough! You are in your most difficult classes up to now, you are dealing with more and more duties, you’re hitting a milestone nearly every week…and then you are asked by us to college. 12th grade may never be easy, you can simply make it less hard. Though each student’s college procedure is unique, you will find a number of behaviors/mind sets that I have experienced cause stress that is unnecessary and time again. Some call them the Four Horseman of the Common Appocalypse (and by some I mean me), but they’ve been all avoidable if you know how to recognize the signs!

Focusing too much on that which you can’t change.

Do you keep worrying all about that C you got in freshman English? Are you regretting your choice to give up the track team? Many students spend their senior fall concentrating on the past, and it drains their time and energy like Snapchat drains my phone battery pack. In the place of stressing about things you can’t change, spend your time writing a well thought out essay, striving for great senior year grades, and putting together the most readily useful application you can. Think upward and onward!

Ignoring the advice of your elders.

Do you nod when your therapist speaks then instantly wipe the conversation from your memory? Do you reject your parents’ guidance like it’s your work? I’m shocked…really, I am. Keep in head that, as they might not constantly be ‘hip and along with it,’ the adults in your life can provide important understanding of your application process (and also assist you identify your strengths so that you can better highlight them). Ignoring their advice can cut you faraway from some pretty valuable information, so why don’t you take most of the help you’ll get?

Dropping in love.

No, I’m not speaing frankly about the lab partner you’ve possessed a crush on for years ( you should certainly just tell them currently)! I am dealing with the head-over-heels feeling students often get for one university on their list. There’s a distinction between having a first choice and being so fixated on a school which you can not even fathom going anywhere else. It is called the school process for a reason—no one knows exactly how it shall end! You are admitted to your top choice (and obviously I hope your top choice is USC), I strongly encourage you to keep an open mind and find a number of institutions you would love to attend though I sincerely hope.

Avoidance.

Are you currently making things to your minute that is last? Are you putting down finding out about what supplementary essays you’ll need to create? Are you reading this post on 14th january? You are procrastinating! Despite what you may tell yourself, no one works most readily useful under pressure (trust me…this is a ‘do as I state, much less I do’ situation). Multiple drafts are the key up to a good essay, and making significant progress before the eleventh hour is the sole defense against an application that is sloppy. You have got enough on your own plate year that is senior. If you don’t yet have a plan for how you are going to finish most of your essays, supplements, applications, etc. make one! You do not want to rush (or worse, forget something) in this technique. So stop reading this weblog and get to work—I know you can perform it!

Student Highlight: USC Student Body President, Edwin Saucedo

Hey All,

It’s Natalie Guevara and I also’m excited to begin working with our weblog. While discovering topic ideas, I thought of common concerns we get from potential students and another of my favorites is obviously: exactly what’s it want to be described as a learning pupil at USC? And even though I’m an alumna of the university and had personal experiences… that is great really want you to know from current pupils with a bigger range of majors/involvement/background/etc. So rather than hear about most of the cool things I have to say (many of you get an adequate amount of that), I’ll find current students to let you know about their experiences. For our first installment, we now have Edwin Saucedo, the Student Body President for the Undergraduate scholar Government. He’s originally from South Gate, CA and is set to graduate this May that is coming 2017. Here’s what he previously to express:

Four years ago, I found myself where many of maybe you are right now: frustrated with my personal statement and tired of searching for the perfect college. It absolutely was hard sufficient attempting to navigate college applications when neither of my parents talked English or had pursued advanced schooling themselves. The stress of finding the best place to pay the following four years was extremely overwhelming.

As we think right back inside my college application process the first thing I have to say is, everything worked out much better than i really could have ever anticipated. When I applied to college I never thought I would end up at USC. I grew up in South Gate, CA where just 6% associated with the total population pursues a college degree. It’s obvious, I never imagined i’d find myself being the pupil Body President my year that is senior here. The four years in between my senior year of high college and senior year of university have triggered a quantity of lessons, experiences, and friendships we never expected. However, the combination of all of the these life that is unexpected has indeed led me to where I am today.

Being Student Body President at perhaps one of the most prestigious universities in the nation is an job that is intimidating. It isn’t easy trying to represent nearly 19,000 students who come from over 100 different countries, are of all various races, and have extremely diverse backgrounds that are economic. However, its additionally a very rewarding opportunity. Every day we get to go into our student government office and ask myself: how do I get this to college a better place for all students? That is our goal in student government, to create the very best undergraduate experience, and that’s why I made the decision to run for this position last spring.

I spend at least twenty hours every week listening to students’ experiences, asking them exactly how I could be of any service, and connecting them to the appropriate channels on this campus. On one other part of things, I advocate on the behalf to administration in efforts to produce better campus policies, address any presssing issues, and plan money for hard times of our campus. My favorite part however is taking the information I learned from both students and administrators and picking out unique solutions to addressing these dilemmas.

In student government we pride ourselves in being innovators and creative thinkers. We challenge each shmoop.pro other’s ideas and provides suggested statements on improvements. At the end of the day, we produce proposals on what to address each and each issue. It is through these creative proposals that we’ve been able to get our students free Uber rides from 7pm to 2 am and have actually gotten a regular farmers market on campus. But our work does not end there. Over the length of the year our student government places on over 300 events that are free our students. These are priced between intimate talks about our education system to bringing speakers like Laverne Cox or musicians like Diplo for all of our students to take pleasure from.

We shape the experience that is undergraduate give students the opportunity to explore perspectives beyond their own; because that is exactly what college is focused on. Regardless of yourself and be challenged by others whether you go to USC or choose elsewhere as your new home, dare to challenge. As President I always encounter students perspectives that differ from my own, they’re not right or wrong but different, and that is okay.

You will end up, but instead what you will do once you get there as you approach the last months of the college application process don’t worry as much about where. College is time for you to explore and find your passion. I came across my passion within student federal government and working towards enhancing USC for present and future students. For you, that passion may lie in another activity. Regardless, enjoy your final months of high school and get prepared to embark in a journey that is new of unique and exciting experiences. Good luck on applying to university and should anyone ever get disillusioned, remember that why is Trojans strong is that we always Fight in!
